The OLV Hospital in Aalst believes it’s essential to create a safe healthcare environment for patients. ‘To start with, the preventive maintenance for all our technical installations and safety systems is crucial. And lots of attention needs to be paid to sustainability and energy consumption too,’ explains Jeroen Vidts, Director Technical Services at OLV Hospital in Aalst-Asse-Ninove.
Mechelen Hospital convinces OLV Hospital Aalst
‘We came across Hysopt in 2016 when we went to visit the hospital in Mechelen which was still being built at the time. That’s where I learned that Hysopt was taking care of the hydraulics optimisation in the design. We already knew from an earlier energy audit at OLV in 2014 how much we could benefit from hydraulics optimisation. So that’s when everything fell into place and we decided to start working on this together with Hysopt.’
Prevent excessive energy consumption
‘The biggest challenge for us is the small temperature differences between the hot and cold water routed around our hospital. It means we’re wasting too much energy in our circuits. So if we can reduce that, our energy consumption will fall dramatically too.’

‘One of Hysopt’s main advantages is that it’s science-based software with basic hydraulics principles built in. Applying these basic principles gives you a theoretical model that can be tested in practice. You can also see how just one isolated part of the installation can impact the whole system. And that’s important, because it’s really difficult to know how a new installation will interact with an existing installation in practice when doing new building work.’
Theory versus practice
‘We want to keep using Hysopt to maintain our hydraulics installations in the future. The software can help us test any adjustments we make in practice, so we can check how any new extensions will affect our existing balances and use this to choose the best hydraulics integration,’ concludes Jeroen Vidts.
