Introduction

In a low or net-zero carbon future, geothermal energy is essential in the renewable energy mix. Although geothermal energy has proven its worth, the application is very complex and sensitive to design flaws. Two of the most commonly used systems for seasonal geothermal energy storage are Aquifer Thermal Energy Storage (ATES) and Borehole Thermal Energy Storage (BTES).

Besides the thermal behavior of the underground, the complexity originates from the inseparability of the heating and cooling system to store excess heat in summer and excess coolth in winter. Because of the complexity, the system is prone to design errors, resulting in an inadequate system and a yearly deterioration of the geothermal energy storage.

During the past 6 months Hysopt has implemented ATES and BTES functionality in the software, as well as preconfigured templates to give the users a head start in this difficult matter.

In this webinar Roel Vandenbulcke, Hysopt founder and CEO, and Jonas Cleiren, Functional Analyst, will point out some hydraulic and control aspects to be taken into account when designing a system with geothermal energy storage. Moreover they will demonstrate how to tackle the design challenges with the brand new developed ATES and BTES features in the software.

Topics

  • Basic principles ATES and BTES systems
  • Soil energy balance optimisation
  • Regeneration options for the geothermal storage
  • Sensitivity analysis on geothermal storage and production units
