Biogas Holland Refines Sustainable Energy Design with Hysopt
“We’re not a typical installation company, and that’s exactly why Hysopt helps us make our designs smarter and more efficient.”
Jelmer Rijpkema
Lead Engineer, Biogas Holland

As specialists in renewable energy systems, Biogas Holland takes an unconventional approach to design. Their projects, which often combine heat recovery, biogas digestion, and custom-built control logic, push beyond what standard HVAC modelling tools typically handle.
When Lead Engineer Jelmer Rijpkema started his first project with Hysopt, he knew it wouldn’t be a textbook case. “We do something that’s not so typical for the installation sector,” he says. “So naturally, we ran into a few things that weren’t straightforward to model — but one of Hysopt’s Engineers, Finn, guided us through.”
Even so, Jelmer immediately saw Hysopt’s potential. By identifying hydraulic errors and ensuring optimal component sizing, the software added value from the start. “You can already stop after the sizing phase and see the benefit,” he explains, “but once we start reusing templates and scaling up, the real payoff will come.”

“Once we get the first model right, we can copy and adapt it — that’s when Hysopt becomes truly powerful.”

Turning complexity into clarity
For Biogas Holland, each project brings a unique mix of thermal and control challenges. Modelling both the supply and return circuits simultaneously isn’t standard practice, but it’s essential for their energy systems. “Our system setup is a bit unconventional, so we had to think creatively in how we modelled it,” says Jelmer. “Hysopt’s flexibility allowed us to still model exactly what we need — and as the software evolves, it will only get easier to do so.”
The team quickly learned that using Hysopt’s inspiration library—a vast collection of predefined components and circuits—helped them accelerate the modelling process. It felt complex at first, but soon became a powerful toolbox for tackling custom systems with greater accuracy and consistency.
Laying the foundation for scalability
“This first project is all about building the foundation,” he says. Once the base model is complete, he plans to create templates that can be reused across future projects — reducing both cost and setup time.
Working closely with Hysopt’s Experts, Jelmer is also exploring how simulation can support control strategy design, not just hydraulic sizing. “When the model is hydraulically ready, I want to play around with how we control it,” he explains. “That’s where simulation adds another layer of insight.”
Building confidence through data
While Biogas Holland’s clients often verify performance independently, Jelmer sees clear potential in using Hysopt’s simulation results to demonstrate value directly to end customers. The visualisations and reports can help explain design choices, justify investments, and highlight long-term energy efficiency gains.
Jelmers’s also enthusiastic about using Hysopt’s future reporting tools, and looks forward to deepening their use of simulation and performance data. He sees every project as a chance to refine their models and push the boundaries of sustainable system design.
“We’re learning something new with every project,” says Jelmer. “And with Hysopt, we’re able to turn those insights into better, more efficient solutions for our clients.”
