OAS BIM & Engineering Strengthens Hydraulic Design with Hysopt

“I don’t know any software that does what Hysopt does. We just have to be honest — I haven’t come across it.”

Omar Alsahli

OAS BIM & Engineering

OAS BIM & Engineering is a specialised player in HVAC engineering, with a strong focus on hydraulic calculations, piping design, and technical modelling. The company supports both small and large organisations with a specific part of the design process — from pipe sizing to hydraulic schematics and load calculations.

Omar, who is currently building the company together with a partner, works on a wide range of projects, from residential buildings to small-scale commercial applications, where accurate hydraulic design is essential.

Before using Hysopt, much of this work was done in Excel. He had even built his own calculation sheets, but as he explains, “everything is calculated statically — flow, temperature, mixing temperature, based on formulas.”

“With Hysopt, I’ve been able to solve complex projects and problems that you simply can’t demonstrate with traditional calculations.”

From disconnected tools to one integrated approach

Before switching to Hysopt, Omar worked with a combination of Excel and tools such as Vabi. While useful for specific calculations, these tools remained limited to individual parts of the system.

As he explains, they are “good programs for calculating piping itself, but not with all components and not with the KV values.” This often meant building things manually and entering parameters one by one, making the process more complex and time-consuming.

In Hysopt, he experiences a different approach. “If you want to add, for example, a pressure-independent valve, you don’t have to define everything yourself — you just select it, enter the pressure, and that’s it.”

For him, the real strength lies in having everything in one model. He describes it simply as “easier, and everything is in one package.”

Revealing problems you would otherwise miss

The biggest difference for Omar is the ability to uncover real system issues. He explains that with Hysopt, he has already solved complex projects and problems that could not be identified using traditional tools.

One example involved a heat pump installation where something didn’t add up in the hydraulic design. By modelling and simulating the full system, it became clear that the installation would not function correctly.

As he explains, the issue was related to the use of a four-pipe heat pump in a situation where there was no cooling demand in winter. “Because of this, the heat pump will not function properly — and we discovered that through simulation.”

According to Omar, this is exactly where Hysopt makes the difference: “you simply cannot calculate or reproduce that” with conventional methods.

Working faster and closer to real practice

Beyond technical insight, Omar also sees clear benefits in his daily workflow. He explains that he can now carry out piping design in Hysopt quickly and easily, whereas before it required more manual work and time.

A practical example is working with floor plans. “In Hysopt, I can simply scale and import a PDF floor plan and draw directly on it,” he says. In tools like Vabi, this is not possible, where everything has to be drawn line by line.

This not only makes the process more efficient, but also more practical. At the same time, he notes that clients are sometimes still used to traditional outputs, such as isometric drawings. Even so, he clearly sees that Hysopt introduces a different way of working.

For Omar, the reason to continue using the software is clear: it’s not just about speed, but about making better engineering decisions and solving problems that would otherwise remain hidden.
